It\u2019s no secret that the trucking industry is essential to our economy. In 2019, trucks moved 10.23 billion tons \u2013 or roughly 72.5%<\/a> \u2013 of the nation\u2019s freight by weight. And, thanks in part to external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and evolving consumer expectations, the industry has changed and grown significantly even more since then: the American Trucking Association predicts the 2022 numbers will show a 24% increase in freight tonnage, representing a 66% rise in revenue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, as the industry grows and evolves so do its challenges. Two of the industry\u2019s most prevalent ongoing issues \u2013 the driver shortage and lengthy detention times \u2013 were greatly exacerbated over the last 2.5 years. For example, in 2005 the industry had a shortage of roughly 20,000 drivers<\/a>. Today, that number is closer to 80,000<\/a>. Between 2014 and 2018, driver detention delays of 6 hours or more increased 27.4%<\/a>. Around 34% of respondents to another survey<\/a> indicated detention further increased during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the unique circumstances of the last couple of years have also created new challenges for the trucking industry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
