It started without even a sound. A residential crime in the early morning hours. A Toyota Tacoma vanished from a driveway in Oakland, leaving behind only shattered glass as evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The owner called the Oakland Police Department, and within minutes, the truck\u2019s VIN was entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. What the thieves didn\u2019t know was that the Tacoma came from the dealership with a LoJack GPS system already on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the LoJack 24-Hour Stolen Vehicle Recovery Hotline was notified, the case lit up on LoJack LE \u2013 a platform that gives law enforcement real-time tracking for vehicles equipped with LoJack GPS technology. That\u2019s when things got interesting. The signal showed the Tacoma had crossed into Mexico\u2026 but was now headed north again toward the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A LoJack Law Enforcement Liaison immediately coordinated with California Highway Patrol\u2019s Mexican Liaison detectives, who began relaying updates to Mexican authorities. By the time the Tacoma reached the border checkpoint, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers had already been alerted and were watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspect made a sudden move, turning southbound in an apparent attempt to return to Mexico \u2013 but it was too late. CBP officers were in position. Working in sync with CHP detectives, they intercepted the Tacoma right at the border platform. The driver was detained and handed over to CHP\u2019s Foreign Export and Recovery (FEAR) detectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truck, undamaged, was returned to its owner \u2013 a recovery made possible by split-second communication and the LoJack LE system\u2019s precision tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators also discovered the thieves had \u201ccold plated\u201d the vehicle with stolen license plates in a failed attempt to mask its identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
